Planning an interior painting project? Start with the scope.

List the surfaces, not just the rooms.

Two estimates for the same room can describe very different work. Start by listing the rooms and the surfaces you want included. Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets, and built-ins are separate decisions.

A simple room-by-room list makes the conversation more useful and helps you notice what an estimate leaves out.

• Which rooms and closets are included?
• Will ceilings, baseboards, window trim, and doors be painted?
• Are you changing colors or refreshing the current color?
• Are there high ceilings or difficult-to-reach areas?

Point out the details that need attention.

Share photos of peeling paint, stains, cracks, damaged trim, and previous repairs. Ask the contractor to explain which surface repairs and preparation are included, and which conditions need a closer look.

Do not assume a new coat of paint will resolve an underlying moisture or surface problem. Bring those concerns into the estimate discussion before choosing the finish.

Plan around the way you use your home.

Explain whether you will be home during the work, which rooms must remain accessible, and any scheduling restrictions. Discuss furniture, fragile belongings, pets, parking, and access with the contractor.

Ask who moves and protects furniture, what daily cleanup includes, and when each room can be used again. The answers depend on the actual scope and products selected.

Compare the written scope.

Compare more than the total price. Look for the surfaces included, preparation, proposed products, exclusions, cleanup, and how changes are handled.
